Man Fled New Jersey Courtroom and Injured Sheriff's Officer, Prosecutor Says

The Cumberland County prosecutor's office says the man was in a drug court and had just been ordered to the county jail Wednesday when he ran out of the courtroom, ran to the parking garage and jumped into his vehicle.

Authorities allege that a defendant ordered to jail fled a New Jersey courtroom and struck a sheriff's officer on his way out of a parking garage.

The Cumberland County prosecutor's office says the man was in a drug court and had just been ordered to the county jail Wednesday when he ran out of the courtroom, ran to the parking garage and jumped into his vehicle.

Prosecutors allege that when two county sheriff's officers tried to apprehend him there, he struck one of them with the vehicle, pinning him between the officers' vehicle and his own. The officer was taken to a hospital with a crushed hand and bruises.

Prosecutor Jennifer Webb-McRae said the man was being sought on charges including aggravated assault and eluding.
