Prison Sentence for Danieal Kelly's Dad

2 1/2 to 5 year sentence for father of disabled girl who starved to death

The father of a disabled girl who starved to death in a filthy Philadelphia apartment was sentenced to two and a half to five years in prison.

Daniel Kelly, 40,  was sentenced on Thursday, along with two social workers assigned to her case, who rarely visited the girl’s home. Mickal Kamuvaka, 62, and Dana Poindexter, 54, were both sentenced to two and half to five years for child endangerment and perjury. Kamuvaka is already serving a 17-year federal sentence for involuntary manslaughter, tampering with evidence, forgery and conspiracy.

Kelly was convicted in July of felony child endangerment in the death of 14-year-old Danieal Kelly. The girl weighed just 42 pounds when she died in 2006. Her body was covered in bed sores.

The father once had custody of the girl but abandoned her with her unfit mother. Andrea Kelly is serving 20 to 40 years for third-degree murder.

The horrifying case prompted the firings of several city officials. More than a dozen people have been convicted in state and federal investigations.
