Principal Who Banned Strapless Dresses Gets Threatening Email

A central New Jersey school district canceled a middle school dance this week after the school's embattled principal received a threatening email.

Authorities did not disclose specific details about the threat made against Readington Middle School Principal Sharon Moffat.  But they say the threat received Friday morning apparently came "from overseas'' and is not considered credible.

A dance scheduled for Friday night was cancelled after the threat was received. District Superintendent Barbara Sargent said township police offered to have an officer at the school for the dance, but said it seemed "more sensible to not hold'' the dance.

Moffat recently drew national attention for banning girls from wearing strapless dresses to an eighth-grade dance scheduled for June. She says such dresses distract boys.

Dozens of parents and students attended a school board meeting Tuesday to protest Moffat's dress-code policy, calling it arbitrary and sexist. The board will review the policy before its next meeting, scheduled for May 14.

Sargent said she was frustrated that the dress code issue has become such "a media event,'' saying the district would rather be focused on teaching and curriculum.

"We have been working to maintain a focus on instruction in spite of these very distracting events.'' She said.
