Power Outage Still a Problem for Thousands in NJ

Stormy weather leaves thousands in NJ in the dark

Thousands of people in southern New Jersey are still without power early Sunday afternoon, three days after severe storms roared through the region.

Atlantic City Electric said about 1,400 customers, mostly in Camden County, still didn’t have power as of 6:30 p.m. But crews remained out in force across the region, and the utility said all customers were expected to have their service back by sometime Sunday night.

The wicked storms -- which contained heavy rains, strong winds and lightning -- knocked down or snapped numerous trees and power lines on Thursday and damaged several utility poles.

They also damaged the utility's electrical system, forcing it to stage a controlled outage in some areas Friday afternoon so repairs could be made.
