Possible Mumps Outbreak at Jersey Shore Club

Health officials are investigating the possible outbreak

Health officials in Monmouth County are investigating a possible mumps breakout at a popular Jersey shore club.

Monmouth County health officials tell The Asbury Park Press that the number of reported mumps cases in the county jumped from seven Wednesday to 22 Thursday.

County Spokeswoman Laura Kirkpatrick tells the newspaper that most of individuals have either been a patron or an employee of D'Jais in Belmar.

Mumps-like symptoms include the swelling of salivary glands along with fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness and loss of appetite.

Officials are trying to determine the possible source of infection.

The health department says mumps is spread by droplets of saliva or mucus, usually when the infected person coughs, sneezes or talks.
