One man is dead after a police involved shooting in Kensington.
It happened around 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of East Ontario and E Street. Investigators say it began when a mother and son called 911, claiming a man pointed a gun at them. After two responding officers arrived, investigators say the suspect took off in his car. The officers located him a few blocks away, according to police.
Police say the suspect fired first at the officers while he was still driving and then fired another round. The officers fired back, striking and killing him, according to investigators. While the officers are currently on administrative duty and are under investigator, at this point police believe they were following protocol.
“At this particular time, preliminarily, this seems to be a very good shooting,” said Philadelphia Police Chief Scott Small. “The suspect pointed a weapon at civilians and they called us. The suspect then pointed a weapon and fired shots at the police officer, more than one string of fire, at least two different locations we believe, the suspect fired at the officers. The officers did their job and returned fire.”
The suspect has not been identified. Police only say he’s a man in his 50’s.
