A police officer is in the hospital after a car accident in Egg Harbor Township.
It happened Saturday afternoon on 9th and Spruce Avenue. Investigators say Officer Ed Bertino, 35, was driving South on Spruce when his vehicle was struck by a 1989 Volvo which had crossed the center line. Investigators identified the driver of the Volvo as Alexandro Doukopoulos, 18, of Linwood. Police say Doukopoulos was driving North on Spruce when he crossed the double yellow line, striking Bertino's vehicle.
Police say Officer Bertino had to be pulled out of his vehicle with the jaws of life by the Bargaintown volunteer Fire Department. He was treated at the scene and then taken to the Shore Medical Center.
The roadway was closed to traffic for around an hour before the scene was cleared. Police say there is a summons pending upon completion of the investigation.
