Police Nab Juniata Park Serial Predator Wanted for Sex Assaults

Philadelphia Police say they have caught the man responsible for sexually assaulting two women and attacking a teen in Juniata Park.

Byron Mitchell, 25, has been charged for allegedly committing the three assaults in October near the Erie-Torresdale stop on the Market-Frankford Line, according to police.

It was early in the morning on Oct. 10 when Mitchell allegedly sexually assaulted a 22-year-old woman at gunpoint in the driveway of a home along the 1400 block of E. Lycoming Ave Later that morning, he allegedly sexually assaulted a 20-year-old college student along O Street, just blocks from the first attack.

Five days later, on Oct. 15, the suspect struck again, this time attacking a 15-year-old girl along, police said. That girl was able to break free during the attack.

Special Victims Unit Captain John Darby says investigators began eyeing Mitchell after a patrolman spotted him sitting in the passenger seat of a car several weeks ago. Police had distributed sketches of the suspect and surveillance video following the attacks.

Investigators worked the case and once the evidence matched up, Mitchell was taken into custody, according to police.

Police say Mitchell lives in the neighborhood and does not have a history of sex crimes, but has had contact with police previously.

Mitchell faces 10 sex charges and remains in police custody.
