Woman in ICU After Severe Sexual Assault: Police

Suspect still on the loose after savagly beating and assaulting woman

Police are looking for a man who allegedly beat and sexually assaulted a 47-year-old woman in North Philadelphia Wednesday night.

The crime occurred behind a deli on the 5600 block of N. Broad Street around 10 p.m., Police Lt. Thomas McDevitt said Friday.

Authorities say the suspect visited the deli about 20 minutes before the crime occurred and they believe he frequented the neighborhood.

Surveillance video from inside the store shows the suspect prior to the attack. The man is described as a black male in his 20s. He is believed to be 6 ft. tall and has a heavy-set build.

Cameras also showed him wearing jeans, Timberland boots and a black AERO hooded sweatshirt that was left at the scene.

A deli employee told police he witnessed the attack while taking out the trash. He says he saw the suspect on top of the woman who was half-naked and unconscious, Lt. McDevitt said.

After noticing the employee outside, the suspect fled, police said.

The woman is in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Albert Einstein Medical Center.

Her injuries are so severe she has been unable to communicate with police, Lt. McDevitt said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Philadelphia Police at 215.686.TIPS.
