Police are on the hunt for thieves who they say stole several items from unlocked cars in Montgomery County neighborhoods. Police say the break-ins took place in Jenkintown, Abington, Rockledge and Cheltenham in the last two weeks. The thieves have stolen cash, credit cards, laptops and GPS units, according to investigators.

“I would like to think that my personal belongings are safe on my own property,” said Kristen Robinson of Jenkintown. “It does feel scary that someone would come that close up into my yard.”

Robinson and nearly two dozen of her neighbors all had their cars broken into, according to police.

“They check door handles,” said Jenkintown Police Chief Albert Divalentino. “As soon as they find a door that’s unlocked, whatever is in there is gone in seconds. Then they disappear.”

Divalentino says a number of residents were victimized on July 3 between 12 a.m. and 4 a.m. on the 200, 400 and 500 blocks of Runnymede Avenue. Police are investigating whether a man and woman spotted shopping at a Philadelphia Wawa at 2 a.m. on July 3 could be behind the crimes. Police say the couple spent money on a credit card that was stolen from inside a Jenkintown car.

“We’re almost certain they’re not Jenkintown residents,” said Divalentino.

Police are trying to figure out the identity of the couple. They are also investigating a silver car they say the couple was spotted in.
