Arrest Made in Hit-and-Run Death of Girl

Reading Police say the driver who struck and killed a 3-year-old girl and then sped off is now in custody.

Reading Police say the driver who fatally struck a young girl and then fled the scene is now in custody.

On Thursday around 7 p.m., 3-year-old Ja'lexy Bobet was walking along the 1000 block of Cotton Street with her 10-year-old cousin. Suddenly, police say, the girl was struck by a Ram pickup truck which then fled the scene. Bobet was taken to Reading Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

“They were going to the store to get a little bit of candy,” said Bobet’s aunt Tina Acevedo. “When they came out they went to cross the street. They just flew up this street and they just hit her and they kept on going. It's like they had no remorse about hitting anything. To them it was like hitting an animal. They didn't care."

Police say they discovered a truck matching the description of the hit-and-run vehicle a few hours after Bobet’s death. It was found abandoned near Mount Penn in Lower Alsace Township, according to investigators. Investigators confirmed it was the same truck. On Friday, police told NBC10 the suspect in the hit-and-run was arrested and is now in custody. They have not yet revealed the suspect's identity.
