Police Find 9-Year-Old's Body in River

After a day and a half of searching, Philadelphia Police found the body of 9-year-old Madousou Konneh in the Schuykill River Thursday morning.

Madousou was playing with a group of friends Tuesday evening on the banks of the river near 56th Street when a boy playfully pushed her into the water at about 8 p.m.

The little girl could not swim and a strong current pulled her away and she disappeared, despite her 14-year-old sister’s efforts to save her.

Madousou was one of Mawa Trawally’s seven children, all of whom immigrated to Philadelphia from war-torn Liberia in 2005. The girl’s mother wept Wednesday when there was little hope that the girl could have survived. Through an interpreter, Trawally said that all she wanted was to see her child’s body.

"Unfortunately, kids are attracted to water... they don't realize how dangerous this river is with the current as fast as they are," Walker said. "It's just a tragic incident, right now."
