Pickup Crashes Into Pond, 3 Men Killed

Three men were killed when a pickup plunged into a small pond in western Pennsylvania and overturned, trapping them inside, authorities said.

Emergency crews in Indiana County were called to South Mahoning Township just before 12:30 a.m. Sunday, officials said.

State police said the three had gone to the location on private property to meet friends at about 10 p.m. Saturday and remained there for a short time before leaving.

But, police at the Indiana barracks said, they returned in the pickup and were heading up the dirt access road to the property but continued traveling straight toward an incline that contained the pond, and the vehicle crested the incline and plunged into the pond.

Police said once in the water, the vehicle “for unknown reasons” rolled onto its roof, trapping the men in the cab while under water. Several friends rushed to the pond to try to help but were unable to rescue the victims.

Volunteer firefighters from Plumville recovered the bodies of the men, who were pronounced dead shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday.

Chief Deputy Coroner Jerry Overman identified them as 20-year-old Sean Titus, 19-year-old Zane McMillen and 18-year-old Cody Douglas, all of Kittanning.

State police say the investigation into the crash continues, and the coroner said toxicology tests are planned to determine whether alcohol was a factor.
