Philly's Still Digging Out

Crews to remove snow from traffic lanes

Philadelphia street crews spent most of Saturday tackling icy and snow-packed side streets throughout the city -- one day before snow is set to make another unwelcomed visit to the area.

Crews will work through the weekend to clear snow from traffic lanes and narrow streets, according to Streets Commissioner Clarena Tolson. The snow will be dumped into vacant lots around the city.

Adding insult to injury, Monday night’s storm is expected to dump between 2 and 10 inches on the city, according to meteorologist Glenn “Hurricane” Schwartz.

"Even a few inches of snow on top of, lets say, some ice that's on the sidewalk or driveway, that could make things pretty dangerous," Glenn said. "It's just something we don't need."

Two back-to-back monster snowstorms took its toll on the area this month. Wednesday’s storm helped to make this winter season the snowiest ever -- forcing the city to close highways, schools and public transportation.

PECO officials say most of the power lost during Wednesday storm has been restored. More than 14,000 homes were without power following the blizzard. As of Saturday night nearly 3,000 customers were still without power.

The city will be ticketing homeowners who fail to shovel their sidewalks to make them passable for pedestrians. Fines range from $25 to $300.
