Philly Teen Takes Grandmother to Prom

The Science Leadership Academy’s class of 2011 saw a Senior of a different kind at their prom earlier tonight.

75-year-old Beverly Allmond missed her high school prom back in 1953. Her boyfriend and now husband, Bill Allmond, was serving in the Armed Forces.

“I didn’t want to ask anybody else,” said Beverly. “To me at that time it wasn’t such a big deal.”

But it was a big deal for Beverly’s granddaughter, 18-year-old Teila Allmond. That’s why she gave her grandmother the second chance of a lifetime.

“This is a once and a lifetime thing,” said Teila. “I can’t think of anyone else who I’d rather spend it with.”

Teila, a student at Philadelphia's Science Leadership Academy, escorted Beverly to her prom. And her family couldn’t have been any happier.

“My mom got her lifelong dream and my daughter got her date,” said Teila’s mother and Beverly’s daughter, Tracey Almond.

“I’m happy for both of them,” said Bill Allmond. “I know that they’re going to have a nice time, they’ll be the life of a party.”

Judging by Beverly’s dance moves, which she showed off to NBC10, Bill might have been right.

“I hope they get back on time,” laughed Bill.

Whether the two party animals met curfew or not, one thing is for certain.

“This is going to be a day that I’ll remember forever,” said Teila. “I’ll never forget it.”
