A Philadelphia radio station is going old school as it switches from its mainstream urban format to throwback hip hop.
Radio One Inc. announced Hot 107.9 FM would become Boom 107.9 FM -- making Philadelphia the second major market where the Silver Spring, Maryland-based broadcasting company has introduced this format, according to company officials.
The change, which affected nine employees, was made after several years of poor ratings, Radio One announced.
"We are working to ensure all of our impacted employees are transitioned with the dignity and respect they deserve," said Shawneen Thompson, Radio One's general manager. "Though disappointed by this unfortunate, but necessary decision, we are excited about our future with Boom 107.9 FM."
Radio One owns or operates 54 broadcast stations in 16 cities across the country.
The broadcasting firm introduced Boom in October at a Houston, Texas station.
