Philly Mob Turncoat Spared Prison Time

A onetime loan shark for the Philadelphia mob who became a star government witness against his alleged former boss has been spared prison time.

The Philadelphia Inquirer said 47-year-old Louis "Bent Finger Lou" Monacello was sentenced Monday to time served.

He could have faced five years in prison after pleading guilty in 2011 to loan-sharking and racketeering. But U.S. District Judge Eduardo Robreno cited Monacello's cooperation in the three-year prosecution of reputed Philadelphia mob boss Joseph "Uncle Joe" Ligambi and his nephew and alleged consigliere George Borgesi.

Neither Ligambi nor Borgesi were convicted.

Monacello told the judge Monday that he left his old life behind since being released from prison on a 2009 state-court conviction.

He said he works for a marketing company and moved to the Jersey Shore.
