Philly Cop Stabbed, Suspect Shot Dead

Suspect shot and killed by police during confrontation in Cobbs Creek, police say

A Philadelphia Police officer was stabbed after a scuffle with a suspect.

The confrontation happened around 7:30 p.m. along the 2900 block of Cobbs Creek Parkway in the Cobbs Creek section of the city, police said.

The unidentified male officer tried to detain a suspicious man who was walking in the area when the suspect fled, Dep. Comm. Kevin Bethel said.

The 12th District officer pursued the man who then allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed the officer, police said. The officer then grabbed his gun and fired on the man, Dep. Comm. Bethel said.

The unidentified male officer was stabbed several times, but authorities say the wounds were not life threatening.

"Most of the action was on his outer clothing," Dep. Comm. Bethel said. "He was able to block the male from stabbing him and able to draw his weapon."

The officer, who is a 10-year veteran of the force, was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for treatment. He was last listed in good condition, police said.

The suspect died at the scene, Dep. Comm. Bethel said. It wasn't immediately clear how many shots were fired at the man.

The Internal Affairs and Homicide divisions are investigating the incident.
