Traffic Stop Turns Deadly

Investigators: Man reached for officer's gun

Philadelphia police officer shot and killed a suspect early Tuesday morning following a struggle.

The shooting happened just before midnight in Germantown.

The officer pulled over a car in the 6300 block of Milton Street because police thought the man was driving a stolen car. The suspect took off, investigators said.

One officer caught up to the man on Johnson Street and tried to arrest him. A struggle ensued. The suspect assaulted the officer several times and took his baton, said police. That's when the officer shot and killed the man.

The suspect was pronounced dead at Einstein Hospital.

The officer was treated at Germantown Hospital for minor injuries and released. The car, it turns out, was stolen last week, according to police.
