Philadelphia's ‘Gateway to the Northwest' Project Announced

Officials announced a $20 million project today that will transform upper Ogontz Ave. into Philadelphia’s “Gateway to the Northwest.” Three development projects are planned to make the transformation happen.

A new streetscape that extends from Middleton St. to 80th and Ogontz Ave. will be constructed. Also, a new SEPTA bus loop will help to change the vehicle and pedestrian traffic at the intersection.

Dramatic new upgrades to the Cheltenham Mall will be made as well, including a major expansion of the Brown’s ShopRite -- with the new upgrades, it will now be one of the largest supermarkets in the state.

“This project promises to create an extraordinary vibrant entryway to the city’s Northwest section,” said Jack Kitchen, President and CEO of the Ogontz Avenue Revitalization Corp.

The Gateway project will also create over 400 new permanent and temporary jobs.

“These investments will raise the Northwest’s profile as a desirable place to live, work and play,” said Kitchen.
