Philadelphia Violent Crime Falls 3 Percent in 2010

Violent crime in Philadelphia dropped 3 percent and property crime rose 4 percent in 2010.

Those figures are consistent with the trend in major cities, and are less dramatic than the double-digit declines of recent years.

Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey cited factors including the city's financial crisis, which led to cuts in overtime and cancellation of two Police Academy classes.

Ramsey said the rise in property crime this year was due largely to thefts.

Homicides this year stood at 304 as of Wednesday, one less than the 2009 total.

Philadelphia averaged more than 400 homicides a year through the 1990s.
