Philadelphia police say two city officers are set to be fired after allegedly illegally detaining a man during a pedestrian stop earlier this year.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross suspended Matthew Walsh and Marvin Jones for 30 days with intent to dismiss. Walsh and Jones are charged with obstructing the administration of law, false imprisonment, tampering with records, official oppression and conspiracy.

Police said Walsh and Jones didn't have reasonable suspicion or probable cause to stop the man along East Sharpnack Street on April 17. They said the officers improperly searched the man and his vehicle, then detained him in handcuffs for about 15 minutes before they eventually drove him a block away and released him.

Police officials reviewed surveillance video and determined the officers falsified the paperwork they submitted on the matter.

The Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 5 will supply the legal defense for both men, the FOP said. Both officers "are entitled to due process," the FOP said in a brief statement to NBC10.
