Two children were hurt after their mother crashed into a Philadelphia police captain's vehicle Wednesday night, according to officials.

The captain, who was on his way to a homicide in West Philadelphia, was driving an unmarked police vehicle on Georges Hill Drive when he was suddenly struck by a Chevy Lumina traveling south on Belmont Avenue, police said.

Officials say the captain's car nearly flipped from the impact.

The driver of the Lumina, a 28-year-old woman, did not have the right of way, according to police. Police also said her 9-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son were inside the Lumina and the crash caused the girl to go head first into the windshield.

Both children were taken to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia where they are being treated for minor injuries. Police say the children were not in car seats and they are investigating whether or not they had seatbelts on.

Neither the mother nor the captain were seriously hurt in the crash.

The Philadelphia Police Department continues to investigate.
