Philadelphia Moves Closer to Banning Cashless Stores

The legislation now heads to the full council for consideration and could be voted on as early as Feb. 14.

A bill that would prohibit most stores in Philadelphia from going cashless is heading to the full City Council for a vote.

The city Law and Government Committee approved the bill by 4-1 after a hearing. Philly.com reports the bill would prohibit retail locations from refusing to accept cash or charging cash-paying customers a higher price.

The legislation now heads to the full council for consideration and could be voted on as early as Feb. 14.

Proponents of the bill argue cashless stores essentially discriminate against consumers who do not have access to bank accounts. The bill was amended to exempt businesses like parking lots and wholesale clubs.

Republican Councilman David Oh opposed the bill, pointing out that City Hall doesn't accept cash for some services.
