Philadelphia Department of Public Health Honors Local Hospitals for Healthy Food Initiatives

Hospital food, once the punch line of comedian’s jokes, has come a long way.

Tuesday morning, the Philadelphia Department of Public Health honored six area hospitals for their healthy food initiatives through the “Good Food, Healthy Hospitals” program.

Currently 10 Philadelphia hospitals are participating in the initiative — part of the health department’s “Get Healthy Philly program — that began two years ago. The program is funded by a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention through the city health department with technical assistance, educational resources and marketing support from The Common Market, a distributor of local foods to the Mid-Atlantic region.

“Philadelphia has some of the highest rates of diet-related chronic disease in the nation,” said Tatiana Garcia Granados, co-founder and co-director of the Philadelphia-based Common Market. “By increasing access to healthy food served on site, these hospitals are treating these illnesses before they begin, saving thousands of dollars and years of preventable suffering.”
