Philadelphia has been announced as one of the winners of an award that could total $2 million for the city's efforts to address climate change and sustainability.

The Bloomberg American Cities Climate Challenge award is given out to 20 cities with ambitious plans to tackle climate change and promote city sustainability. Philly.com reports the monetary amount of the award has not been finalized and city officials say they may not know how much they will get until other winners are announced.

Philadelphia won for a plan outlining key areas that needed to be addressed to rein in energy use in buildings and transportation.

The city's sustainability office director Christine Knapp says the award could be used to help lower building carbon emissions or expanding a power purchase agreement.
