Pharmacy Burglar Leaves Keys in Car Trunk, Gets Nabbed

A suspect in the burglary of a suburban Philadelphia pharmacy has been arrested because he left his keys hanging from the lock in the trunk of his car.

43-year-old Thomas Ferkler broke into Corus Pharmacy on West Chester Pike last Tuesday and stole about $400,000 worth of perscription drugs, according to Upper Darby Police.

Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said police were stumped at first about the theft since the burglar disabled the alarm and surveillance systems.

But a few days later, police arrested repeat offender Ferkler. Chitwood says a neighbor saw the keys left in the trunk for a few days and notified police.

When police checked out the situation, they found stolen drugs in the trunk and a gym bag with the suspect's name and address.

As Chitwood told reporters Sunday: "Score one for the Upper Darby Police Department vs. Stupidity."

Ferkler is charged with burglary, theft and possession with intent to deliver. Police say they expect to make other arrests in the case.
