Passenger Runs, Driver Shoots Self in I-95 Police Chase: Cops

A man shot himself while police cars were pursuing him and another man on I-95 in Delaware County Thursday morning, police say

A police chase ended Thursday morning with the passenger in the pursued car trying to run away and the driver shooting himself after crashing on U.S. Interstate I-95, authorities say.

The bizarre incident happened at about 11:40 a.m. on I-95. The chase started near the airport and ended on the southbound ramp to state Route 452 in Upper Chichester Township, Pa.

Pennsylvania State Police say that a trooper initially tried to pull the car over for speeding, but the driver wouldn't pull over.

The trooper chased the car down I-95 until the driver hit the center guardrail when he was trying to get exit onto Rt. 452. After the car spun around and came to a stop, the passenger jumped out and ran off. The trooper chased him on foot. Then they both heard a gunshot, ran back to the car and found the driver had shot himself to death, police say.

Pennsylvania State Police were trying to notify family members before releasing the man's identity. Police say the driver did have previous run-ins with the law.
