Woman Swept Away During Flash Flood in Pennypack Creek

The 30-year-old woman went into the water at Sandyford and Ryan avenues around 6:15 p.m. and did not resurface, officials said.

UPDATE: Police recovered the woman's body Sunday. New details here.

The search for a woman who fell into the Pennypack Creek in Philadelphia Saturday evening continued into Sunday.

The 30-year-old woman's boyfriend told police they were taking pictures in a storm drain around 6:15 p.m. Saturday near Sandyford and Ryan avenues when the water swept her away. A flash flood warning was in place at the time.

Kayla Pratt, who lives nearby, told NBC10 she heard the woman's boyfriend screaming.

"He was like, 'Me and my girlfriend were sitting on a drain. I can't find her. She got washed away,'" Pratt said.

The creek was at least 10-feet deep at the time.

"It's actually very dangerous because once the storm happens, the water will get really, really high," Richard Hurst, who also lives nearby, told NBC10.

A marine unit searched until about 9 p.m. Saturday and resumed the effort Sunday.
