Penn Students Push for Freshman Gender-Neutral Housing

The University of Pennsylvania may have an overhaul of their housing policies.

Currently, the university allows returning students and incoming exchange and transfer students to room with a student of the opposite sex. Freshman however, have to room with someone of the same sex.

Now groups are pushing for gender-neutral housing rights for all students, regardless of year, according to the Daily Pennsylvanian.

Tyler Ernst, Wharton and Engineering junior and Lambda Alliance Chairman, doubts there is any administrative opposition and thinks the change will go smoothly.

In addition, Ernst hopes that this policy change will usher in more transparency over LGBT-related issues in literature about Penn’s dorms.

People pushing this change hope to see progress by Fall of 2012.
