Religious Groups Gather in Philly for Peace Walk

Hundreds of people of various faiths gathered in North Philadelphia Sunday for the annual Peace Walk.

The group gathered at the Al Aqsa Islamic Society on the 1500 block of Germantown Avenue around 2 p.m. They then walked to the Village of the Arts and Humanities on 2544 Germantown Avenue shortly after 4 p.m. and to the West Kensington Ministries on the 2100 block of N. Hancock Street around 5:30 p.m. where the event ended with a meal.

The Peace Walk featured participants of different cultures, religions and faith traditions, including Muslims, Christians, Jews, Sikhs, Hindus, Buddhists, Bahá'ís and secularists. Attendees visited different houses of worship while engaging in conversation, singing, praying and reflecting.

“The Walk itself, coupled with the many activities the group engages in throughout the year, offers the City a spiritual alternative to violence in Philadelphia's neighborhoods,” organizers said. “Through worship, dance, chanting, prayer and conversation, the Interfaith Peace Walk facilitates dialogue through the urgency for peaceful change.”

Each year the event, which began in 2004, has a different theme. This year’s theme was “Reclaiming the Earth, Repairing the World.” Organizers say the theme is about finding ways people can help create peace as an alternative to violence and finding sustainable ways to treat the environment.
