Parents, Teachers Rally Against Proposed Philly School Cuts

Hundreds of people gathered in Northwest Philadelphia Sunday to protest a budget proposal that would mean big cuts for local schools.

Nearly 200 parents, teachers and students rallied at the Trolley Car Diner on Germantown Avenue to urge state legislators to work to restore education funding.

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett unveiled a budget proposal that includes more than $600 million in cuts that would affect schools throughout the state, especially in Philadelphia.

About 3,000 jobs -- including 1,200 teacher positions and full-day kindergarten – would be eliminated. Several athletic, arts and transportation services are also on the chopping block.

House Republicans are expected to propose a new budget in Harrisburg that would restore some of the cuts to education.

A citywide rally is scheduled for Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Dilworth Plaza.
