Pa. Joins Group to ID Duplicate Voters

Pennsylvania has joined a multi-state consortium in an effort to track duplicate voters outside state borders.

The Pennsylvania Department of State announced Tuesday that the state is the 24th to have joined the program, which is based in Kentucky and called the Interstate Voter Registration Crosscheck Program.

Department of State spokesman Ron Ruman says this will be a county-to-county operation and that similar checks already happen between counties within the state.

When duplicates are found, county officials will attempt to contact the twice-registered voters to verify whether they've moved.

Ruman says voters who can't be reached will become inactive through two federal elections. Those registrations will then be canceled if they still haven't been verified.

Pennsylvania will begin providing voter data in 2014.
