Pa. Board Considers Ending Most Classroom Birthday Parties

Death to classroom cupcakes?

New nutritional guidelines up for review would put an end to frequent birthday celebrations inside Pennsylvania's classrooms.

The state Board of Education is considering new rules that would limit parents to a single sweet treat at school parties and allow classrooms one birthday celebration per month.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported Monday that the rules would allow the state to withhold or rescind reimbursements for districts that don't comply.

The state Department of Education issued nutritional guidelines for classroom parties in 2006. Those encouraged districts to trim the number of sugary snacks available and include fruits and vegetables.

The board expects to vote on the new guidelines this spring.
