PPA Adds Meters for Bikes and Scooters

This week the Philadelphia Parking Authority is launching a new pilot program that will provide motorcycles and scooters with 60 parking spaces in Center City, according to KYW Radio. Officials are hoping the program will help discourage illegal sidewalk parking.

"We're going to install spaces on certain streets in Center City, particularly the southwest quadrant of Center City, where there will be spaces designated for motorcycle and scooters," said Rick Dickenson with the Parking Authority.

The Parking Authority will ticket any motorcycles and scooters that are parked on blocks where these new parking spaces exist, the radio station reports. The rates for motorcycle-only spots will be less than those for regular auto parking and new meters will be installed to handle multiple vehicles.

"Some of them will be long-term parking for people who are using their scooters for commuting to work, and some will be one half of the rates for auto parking on that block. Once we see how this works, we'll replicate it in other areas of Center City."
