Police Say Tow Truck Drivers Sold Cars for Scrap

Dozens of cars that disappeared off of Philadelphia streets from 2009 to 2011 ended up sliced up in salvage yards, police said Saturday.

Philadelphia's Major Crimes Auto Squad said after an extensive investigation, they pinned the missing vehicles on 8 tow truck drivers.  Authorities said many of the vehicles that went missing had been disabled on the highway or involved in accidents.  But some of the vehicles were yanked out of legal spots, police said, and then turned over to scrap and salvage yards around the city.

The 8 arrested are: Darrel Larkins, 53, Emilio Ortiz, 40, Hector Figueroa, 33, Stephen Schultz, 28, Levare Scott, 22, Louis Amaro, 31, and Karl Hawk, age 28.

Police arrested the men for unlawful taking, and other offenses.
