Fatal Fire in South Philly

An early morning fire claimed a life a woman in South Philadelphia Sunday morning.

The incident took place on the 2200 block of South Croskey Street, at 1:55 a.m.

Fire Deputy Commissioner Ernest Hargett said the victim was a woman.  Firefighters recovered her body from a bathroom on the second floor.

A 23-year-old man was injured after jumping from a second floor window. Police transported the man to the hospital for cuts and smoke inhalation and was in stable condition

Firefighters had the blaze under control by 2:10 a.m. A preliminary investigation revealed the building's smoke alarms did not function properly.

The 55-year-old victim's name has not been released.
