Fatal Fall Down Elevator Shaft

A Philadelphia man is dead after falling down an open elevator shaft.

Police said the accident happened at a building on 701 Chestnut Street near South 7th, around 11:40 p.m. Friday.

Authorities said the death appears to be an accident.  The victim, a 25-year-old, lived on buildings 5th floor.  The building featured older-style gated elevator doors.  When police arrived, they said a light was out on the floor, and they believe the victim stepped into the open shaft without realizing that the elevator was not on his floor.

After the fall, the man became stuck in the space between the elevator and the shaft.

He was pronounced dead at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital at 1:14 a.m.
