2 Planes Collide in South Jersey

Police said one pilot is dead after two single-engine private planes collided over an airport in South Jersey.

The accident happened some time before 1:30 p.m on Saturday while the pilots were performing aerobatic manuvers, according to investigators.

Airport spokesperson Don Berenato told NBCPhiladelphia the accident happened in the skies above Hammonton Airport, in Hammonton, New Jersey.

Both planes went down into a wooded area near the airport. The pilot of one of the aircraft parachuted from his craft and lived. Once he reached the ground, the pilot was able to hike out of the woods to a road, where he was found by medical personnel.

Berenato said the pilot was evacuated by helicopter for treatment.

The other pilot did not escape his damaged aircraft. After a search, the pilot of that plane was found dead.
