University to Merge its New Jersey Law Schools

The Rutgers University Board of Governors OK'd the merger of its two law schools into one unified institution that will maintain its two campuses in Camden and Newark, N.J. Pending approval by the American Bar Association, an integrated Rutgers Law School would begin using a single application in the fall of 2015 for the 2016 entering class.

Rutgers officials say the merger will create an alumni network spanning two of the five largest legal markets in the nation, a higher national profile to attract top students and expand curriculum.

Rutgers said the combined law school will employ 100 faculty members, with particular strengths in criminal law, intellectual property, corporate and business law, health law, and public interest law. And with more than 1,000 students, Rutgers said it will be among the nation’s largest law schools while maintaining a student-faculty ratio on par with other leading public law schools.
