Vandals Put Sugar in the Gas Tanks of Overbrook Cars: Cops

Police say vandals do more than just slash tires of cars along Lancaster Avenue

More cars were vandalized in Philadelphia Thursday, this time not only the tires were slashed and chemicals poured on the cars but sugar was poured in the gas tank of some vehicles, according to Philadelphia Police.

The latest area hit was the 6300 block of Lancaster Avenue in the Overbrook section of the city where police say vandals targeted cars parked in driveways as well as on the street.

Investigators say that at least 17 cars had their tires slashed and about seven cars had acid poured on them. One property was hit so badly that the acidic chemical burned the paint right off of cars parked in the driveway.

"It looks like the corrosive, a.k.a. acid, was poured all over each individual car within that particular driveway along with sugar in the tank... the paint is bubbling off of the vehicles," said police Capt. Marvin Singleton.

A hazmat crew was called in to investigate what chemical was used on the cars.

The vandalism occurred between 3 and 6 a.m., according to Singleton.

The total extent of the damage wasn’t immediately known.

This is just the latest is a rash of recent car vandalism. Over the past few month dozens of cars were vandalized in the Mayfair section of the city. And just in the past week a man was arrested for allegedly slashing tires in another section of Mayfair and a chemical was thrown on 17 cars in Lawncrest causing damage to the paint.

Singleton called the most recent vandalism a "senseless act" and he asked that local town watches increase their vigilance to hopefully prevent vandals from striking. Police also handed out flyers in the area of the vandalism that told residents, "If you see something say something."
