The sidewalks in Newark, Del. get pretty cluttered this time of year as thousands of college students make the exodus away from campus.
Some went home for the summer while others flipped the tassel on that funny graduation hat and moved on forever. But, they all have one thing in common.
In the wake of this annual human exodus, there were countless, thousands of tons of used futons, mattresses, books, printers, air conditioners, mini-fridges and anything else a college student needed -- and now apparently doesn’t -- during their stay at school.
The same scene was repeated around the country this year.
But, now the University of Delaware has teamed up with the city for a pretty remarkable little partnership. The “U Don’t Need It” program is in its second year and it’s a big time success.
Students bring all that junk I mentioned in above to a big tent at 225 Paper Mill Rd. The nice folks there take in students’ stuff and then offer it all up -- for free -- to needy families and area charities. Once those groups get what they need, everything that is left goes up for sale to the public.
We’re talking 20 to 30 bucks for a couch, a few bucks more for a printer or power tools. There was also a lot of Ikea stuff like dressers, beds -- you name it.

If you’d like to either donate items or peruse the merch, check out the big tent at 225 Paper Mill Road in Newark. They’re open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. now thru June 6.
