Officer, Man Injured in Fight: Cops

Police say the officer and suspect both fell down a stairwell.

A police officer and another man are in the hospital after a scuffle in Center City.

It happened at the Police and Fire Credit Union on 9th and Arch. Investigators say cashiers on the second floor called police after becoming suspicious about a man in his 30’s who was opening an account.

When a bike officer from the 6th District arrived, police say the man attacked him, leading to a fight between the two. Investigators say the suspect ran into a stairwell and the officer followed. Both men then fell down a flight of stairs, according to police. The altercation spilled into the street where the man was finally arrested.

The officer was taken to Hahnemann Hospital and treated for what police believe was a broken ankle. The suspect was also hospitalized at Jefferson Hospital.

Police are still trying to figure out what it was the man was doing that triggered the suspicion of the cashier.
