Philly Officer Accused of Tipping off Drug Dealer to Investigation

The 23-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department is accused of sharing sensitive information with his half-brother who has alleged ties to a drug group

Rafael Cordero, 51, was indicted for interfering in a federal drug investigation of the Christian Serrano/ Edwin Medina drug trafficking organizations.

According to the indictment released Wednesday, Cordero gave sensitive information about drug investigations to his half-brother, David Garcia, an alleged member of the drug group.

Officials say he told his half-brother about a surveillance camera that had been installed to monitor alleged drug activities taking place at a garage on the 500 block of Indiana Street in Philadelphia.

The investigation into Cordero also showed he went to that garage, without any official reason to be there, and began looking through the windows. When officers arrived on the scene he misrepresented his reason for being there and did not give his name to law enforcement.

Then after leaving the garage, he's accused of calling Garcia and tipping him off about the search. He also allegedly instructed him -- "when you get home take my picture down."

The indictment also shows that between January and July 2011, Cordero allowed his half-brother to store cash at his home, and that he was aware it was drug money.

Federal officials say when Cordero was brought in for questioning about his actions, he denied everything.

If convicted of all charges, Cordero faces up to 35 years in prison.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey will suspend Cordero for thirty days with the intent to dismiss, according to a release issued by the Police Department.
