    The officer was said to be awake and speaking Sunday night, according to police.

    An off-duty Camden Police officer was assaulted in a parking lot before the Phillies season opener Sunday afternoon.

    The cop was punched, knocked to the ground and stomped on as he tried to help someone, according to Philadelphia Police.

    The assault happened in the parking lot of the Jetro wholesale market on the 700 block of Pattison Avenue near the ballpark.

    He was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. No word yet on his name or condition. He was awake and talking at the hospital, police said.

    Charges are pending on the incident.
