Nutter Announces $13M in Small Business Grants

Two programs will direct $13 million to improve commercial corridors in Philadelphia neighborhoods.

One program announced Sunday by Mayor Michael Nutter is $1 million from bonds sold in 2007 to improve the appearance of storefronts.

The blocks getting the grants are to be selected for their potential for improvement in the surrounding neighborhoods.

“Commercial corridors are at the heart of maintaining healthy and vibrant neighborhoods,” said Mayor Nutter.

Targeted Blocks Façade Grant Recipients:

  • 3900 & 4000 Blocks of Lancaster Avenue (Community Development Corp.: People’s Emergency Center)
  • 6700,6800, 7100, 7200 Blocks of Germantown Avenue (Community Development Corp.: Mt Airy USA)
  • Ridge Avenue from Green Lane to Leverington Avenue (Community Development Corp.: Roxborough Development Corporation)
  • 5600 Block of North Fifth Street  (Community Development Corp.: Korean Community Development Services Center)
  • 2700, 2800 & 2900 Blocks of North Fifth Street (Community Development Corp.: HACE Commercial Development Corporation)

The mayor's office says it won't affect the city's general fund.

Another program allows the city to allocate $12 million in federal tax credits for construction projects in blighted areas.

The tax credits are expected to leverage about $56 million in private construction.

“Investing in local businesses now underscores our commitment to ensuring that neighborhoods emerge from this recession stronger than ever,” said Nutter.
