Not Guilty By Reason of Insanity Verdict in Hospital Arson

A judge has handed down a rare ruling in a criminal case, finding a woman guilty by reason of insanity for setting her hospital bed on fire.

The Bucks County Courier Times says the judge returned the verdict Tuesday after two mental health experts testified that 33-year-old Desiree Gottsabend was delusional when she set the blaze inside Lower Bucks Hospital in January 2012.

Sixteen hospital employees suffered smoke inhalation.

Defense attorney Richard Fink said his client was psychotic because of stress and withdrawal from an anti-anxiety drug. He says she believed Queen Elizabeth was paying her medical bills and men in trucks were chasing her.

Gottsabend said she has no memory of what happened. She said she sees a therapist weekly and is no longer on any psychotropic medication.
