No Winter Break for Crime Near Temple University

A recent rash of violent crime around campus has students at Temple on edge.

One student said a man on a bike followed her from the school’s tech center to her off-campus apartment in November.

”He’s like, give me your stuff and then he opened his jacket and he pulled out a silver revolver and he put it to my head. He said you’re gonna give me your stuff or I’m goinig to shoot you,” she said.

Two weeks later, five other students were held hostage inside an apartment near 17th and Gratz and robbed.

“He just walked me down the stairs with a gun to my back,” said one of the victims.

NBC10 received several emails from students who were crime victims or concerned about crimes over winter break.  The sentiments were echoed on a student site on Facebook.

Temple officials said they warned students before the winter break to safeguard themselves when the campus emptied out.  They’ve also stepped up security on-campus and have asked Philadelphia police to patrol off-campus areas hit hard by crime.
