In true form, the New York Post covered its front page with a Photoshopped picture of Pedro Martinez in a diaper, with the headline “Spank Him Yanks: Daddy to Whup Pedro Tonight.”
With Pedro starting against the Yankees’ Andy Pettitte tonight, the photo and the dig are unfortunately apropos thanks to Pedro’s past.
On the bright side, the diaper looks better than that multi-colored suit Pedro wore after losing Game 2. And it’s something that will bite New York in the you-know-what if Pedro commits patricide tonight.
On the other hand, Pedro asked for it with that idiotic statement and it’s a reminder of his history with the Yankees, when Philly needs him to out-perform them the most.
Besides being one of the creepiest statements in sports history, Pedro’s “I just tip my hat and call the Yankees my daddy,” sounds a lot like an excuse—much like the excuses he gave after Game 2.
In his multi-colored coat, and sandwiched with statements about “the Lord,” Martinez sited the fact that he did not eat well and he didn’t get enough sleep because of all the traveling. He traveled 90 miles. He’s in charges of his own diet. He had 12 days to rest up.
Stop the excuses Pedro and throw the damn ball. Or Philadelphia may give you reason to wear a diaper.
