A female fetus found at a South Jersey recycling center was too immature to breathe.
On Friday, the Camden County Medical Examiner's office released its autopsy findings on the fetus found the previous afternoon at ReCommunity Camden on Mt. Ephraim Avenue in Camden.
"A medical examiner determined the fetus was not capable of breathing and died to extreme immaturity," said a release from the Camden County Prosecutors Office. "The age was determined to be approximately 19 weeks and the gender was female."
An employee found the fetus on a conveyor belt around 3 p.m. Thursday.
It wasn't clear where the fetus came from but the plant said that the truck that dropped it off likely did so earlier Thursday afternoon.
The fetus was mixed in with standard curbside recyclables including plastic bottles, cardboard and paper, said ReCommunity.
The recycling facility processes waste from across the region but most of the waste -- likely including the load where the fetus was found -- comes from South Jersey.
